Four Friends
The story of the four harmonious friends, a parable related by the Buddha, teaches the importance of peace, harmony, and respect for elders. In the forest of ancient India lived four animals, a grouse, a hare, a monkey, and an elephant, who talked and behaved like humans. Their wisdom and consideration for others brought them together, and they became close friends, spending their time discussing the world and how to make it a better place.
Since wise beings of that time considered seniority a basis for respect, they established who among them was the oldest. This suited them well; the youngest being the strongest, the others could comfortably sit on his back and enjoy the world passing by as they strolled along in the jungle.
In their future lives, these animals of great merit advanced in their spiritual development. Eventually, grouse became the Buddha; the hare, his disciple Sharipu; the monkey, his disciple Mongelipu; and the elephant, his devotee Kungao.
